Busy weekend for Open Water swimmers

Posted on: 16th September 2019

If you haven’t yet donated to the Swim4Orán Children’s Heartbeat Trust charity then you can do so via

Sat 14th Sep

First outing was the Lough Neagh Discovery Centre at Oxford Island for the Swim4Orán fundraiser in memory of Orán Creaney. The were races in 750m, 1.5km & 3km, as well as a 150m ‘Try a Swim’ for younger swimmers and their parents, plus a 150m Fun Swim with Ripples Special Olympics Club.

In the 750m event PASC were represented by Ruby Young and her dad & coach Steve, as well as Lillie-May Ruddy who finished in 3rd place in the Junior Female section in a time of 11:59.

In the 1.5km event PASC were represented by Lauren Archer along with her dad Stephen, with Lauren winning the Junior Female wetsuit category in a superb time of 22:49. Coming in (much 😊) further down the field was coach Conor McKeown.

In the 3km event PASC were once again represented by the Young family, this time Eva along with dad & coach (and glutton for punishment / proving you’re never too old for a double session!) Steve. Eva finished 3rd in the Junior Female wetsuit category with an excellent time of 1:04:20.

Well done to everyone at Lurgan Masters Swimming Club, staff at ABC Council, and all volunteers including our own Megan Gellately and Lillie-May Ruddy for helping out all day and ensuring a really superb event in memory of Orán and for raising vital funds for Children’s Heartbeat Trust.

Megan volunteered all day to keep us all safe, and if ever we would need a rescue swimmer there’s no better than her!

Sun 15th Sep

Destination Donaghadee for the Swim Ulster Big Bay Swim with races in 750m, 1.5km and 3km distances.

PASC were again represented in the 750m category by Ruby Young recording a great time of 18:48.

In the 1.5km we had Lauren Archer record a time of 22:38, followed closely by dad Stephen in 25:18, then Eva Young 29:31 and dad Steve in 29:40.

The event on Sunday was also part of the Global Swim Series and Lauren Archer is once again leading the worldwide series with 13 races under her belt this season, with Eva Young also now making it onto the leaderboard..

The season isn’t over yet especially for swimmers in warmer parts of the world who will now be playing catch-up, but that won’t deter Lauren Archer who is chasing more events to strengthen her place at the top of the leader board. Next stop for Lauren is Nice, France this weekend – Vive La France et Bon Chance!
